Public Space Scavenger Hunt in Vancouver

The Vancouver Public Space Network is pleased to present PS (Public Space) I Love U — a photo hunt to celebrate the city’s public spaces. They’ve compiled a checklist of Vancouver’s hidden local treasures, some well-known and some…. not so much.

This free, five-hour photo hunt will challenge people to discover the fun public spaces that exist throughout the city. The list includes unconventional public art, community-inspired fixtures, and just fun and odd things that are exclusively Vancouver.

On September 21 from 12pm to 5pm.

Awesome prizes! Details and official rules here.

The first priority of the Vancouver Planning Department is to raise revenue for the city.

TB&P, (a congenial partnership of ex-RCAF pals) were the original planners of False Creek. No one in the office had any idea what public urban space is and we have the desolate forgotten Leg-in-Boot Square as witness. The south shore of False Creek is replete in wet grass to keep off . . .

The public will spend millions to enjoy Saint Mark’s Square. But, the same for Vancouver whooo-ah. Where will the dog pee?

There is a profound difference between a public urban space . . .

. . . and a public green space: VPSN hasn’t clued onto that yet.

So far my initial enthusiasm for VPSN, watching their performance, has waned. I look for the rules of this coming palaver and “404: Page Not Found” comes up.

But that’s not the reason for my waning enthusiasm. VSPN likes having fun parties on the Sea Bus but cannot really grapple with the private property issues of civic urban spaces in Vancouver. Nor of the public’s need to mow the lawn and walk the dog.
