Where Tourists Go
I missed this one by Yuri Artibise – his nominations for the best urban infographics - but fortunately Planetizen picked it up. Yuri included a map by Eric Fisher:
Eric Fischer’s maps of Flickr photos in major cities illustrates the split between tourists and locals. Blue pictures are by locals. Red pictures are by tourists. Yellow pictures might be by either.

UPDATE: I’m bringing Roland Tanglao’s comment forward ’cause (1) it’s a nice match with the above, and (2) Roland was one of the first blogs I ever read on the Net, and I’m so pleased he’s reading mine.
Here’s a related infographic. All photos uploaded to the city of Vancouver during the Mens 2010 Vancouver Olympics Gold Medal game day:
Observations:
- Granville and Robson truly were the epicentre of action that day!
- No photos uploaded from Granville Island
- No photos uploaded from The Drive – East Van was almost totally unaffected by the Olympics which corresponds with my experience. East of Gastown there was no Olympic visitors and not nearly as much buzz.

hi gordon again:
thanks for the uplift of my comment!

it’s quite refreshing to read price tags. It’s far more grounded in reality than most of the food or tech blogs I read
Even the Westend was pretty dead once you were west of Thurlow. The Olympics really were confinded to the downtown part and the “parks” they had set up to entertain people.
It was almost eerie how quiet the Westend was during the entire two weeks, almost as if half the city had fled and left some of us behind, even the places along Denman closed earlier than usual as there were no customers.
