Best of 2010: Transit

Brent Toderian sends along a link to City Fix‘s list of the best transit improvements in 2010.
First up is Guangzhou’s BRT – bus rapid-transit – that carries 800,000 people a day!
The only Canadian mention comes, ironically, in reference to the new Dubai Metro:
The Dubai Metro opened in late 2009 and now carries 140,000 passengers per day (and) aims to have 30 percent of the population using public transportation by 2020. When the Green Line is completed next summer, the Dubai Metro will claim to be the longest fully automated metro network in the world, taking the title away from the Vancouver Skytrain.

You know you have an expensive transit system when….
Vancouver is also included in the honourable mention part of City Fix’s top ten list for having introduced the Olympic Line streetcar for the Olympics. The number of bike share and BRT projects that made it to the top ten is interesting, to say the least. I hope that a public bike share program is introduced here soon. The issue of mandatory helmets is really the sticking point and the law’s repeal is both necessary to the potential bike share program’s success and and an unlikely move from the Provincial Government. It would be worth exploring whether a waiver from the law could be introduced for separated and off-street bike routes. On normal roads a helmet would still be mandatory but on bike friendly streets and separated bike routes the use of helments would only be recommended as helmets are recommended for skiing and snow boarding. Children under 12 would still require a helmet.
