O12 – Gold
The Games are still on, but it’s not too early to pass out some honours in a few categories. Like the best piece of Public Art (Light Division). An easy decision, this one.
Vectorial Elevation - “an interactive artwork that allows participants 
to transform the sky over Vancouver, Canada. Using a three-dimensional interface, this web site lets you design huge light sculptures by directing 20 robotic searchlights located around English Bay.”
Huge international coverage too. The PBS News Hour gave detailed instructions on how participants could design their own light show and watch it live on the web. Better to be in Vancouver, though – from the Upper Levels Highway to East Vancouver, it animated the sky.
Other categories and nominations welcome.
Lets keep it. I was cycling back from UBC last night and EL was really quite spectacular. It was a starry night and it kinda reminded me of the northern lights.
On a late night walk up in Lions Bay, I could see the lights faintly animating around amongst the stars, like a little man-made northern lights. It was pretty special. (I’ve also seen them, though extremely dim, from the 64th Ave overpass over Hwy 91 way out in Delta!)
The visibility of the beams varies depending on the weather. Some nights I can’t see them at all from Yaletown. Other nights (when there’s fog or rain) they reflect off the water droplets in the air and appear much brighter.
