Bike Salmon

July 26, 2009

Niels Torslov, the Transportation Director of Copenhagen, calls cyclists “the children of traffic.”   Blogger/New Yorker/cyclist Caleb Crain writes about a subset of same – bike salmon:

I glared at cyclists who came at me the wrong way down a one-way street and began to refer to such transgressors by a moniker that blogger Bike Snob NYC invented for them: “bike salmon.”

That’s perfect! I’m am all for the increasing of cycling in the city, and I myself have cycled in the city for greater than 10 years. But I strongly believe for the cycling lobby to continue past it’s current state, there MUST be an increase in cyclists use of ‘laws of the road.’

I see probably 10-20% of cyclists ride properly in traffic, but the rest must decide if they are a cyclist or pedestrian, do they abide by stop signs and crosswalks, and do they ride with care for themselves and others on the road.

When this happens, I believe that the acceptance of cycling lanes will be much more acceptable to the average citizen and tax payer.
