Surprising Stories
Another note on the new Convention Centre.
Along the railings are information panels, just as there are along the walkway surrounding Canada Place. That’s where the similarity ends.
Rather than the usual descriptions of scenic landmarks and the bustling port, the content of these panels are, in some cases, actually quite shocking, at least in the subjects they tackle.

Some of this province’s less-than-enlightened history is highlighted, along with stories from its labour past that I for one had never heard of:

And stories not normally referenced in a place one associates more with business and tourism:

Kudos to those who made the decision to tell our stories with unflinching honesty.

Being a resident of Fort St. John, I also quite enjoyed seeing the story of the champagne expedition by Charles Bedaux, a very strange and almost comedic tale in B.C.’s history. I agree, the panels are intriguing and thoughtful and far better than what’s usually seen on similar walkways.
So who do we credit with the decision to favour integrity and historical understanding over mindless boosterism? I’d like to buy him/her/them a beer.
What could be better than mixing historic revisionism wtih left wing propaganda?
